It has been a year and a few days since Kaylan Dowdie, the battered teen was hospitalized after a brutal beating she received by 5 accused women at a party in St. Andrew. Currently, Dowdie is still at the University Hospital of the West Indies, in the intensive care unit and according to Veneshia Buckley the mother of the teen, her daughter keeps holding on to life by putting up a fight even though there have been many twists and turns in the journey.

Emotionally, Kaylan’s mother expressed hurt in the form where she explained that there is still stress among the family of the teenager and the Government has been avoiding the situation where it concerns assisting her child. According to Veneshia, most of the support Kaylan gets comes from social media but even though that is the case, those donations at this point are not enough to take care of a hospital transfer that the battered teen needs to get things together.

A hospital located in the United States for some weeks now had accepted an application for Dowdie to be sent there; however, Buckley has stated that the hefty hospital fee of US $425,000 is too tall to cover at this time and requires public assistance to take care of it.

Since being hospitalized, Kaylan has been through many traumatic moments, experiencing over 9 cardiac arrests, multiple blood transfusions and surgery. As it relates to the survival chance of Dowdie when she was initially hospitalized, the doctor placed it at one percent but she has now been pushing for over a year.

The graduate of Papine High School has a very ambitious mindset and was only held back from success by her unfortunate circumstance as Dowdie already had an online business with other hopes of attending Edna Manley College Of Visual And Performing Arts to further her singing ability.

Getting back to normal will be a heavy task for Kaylan since she will need the best physiotherapy she can get because she has a C2 spinal injury however, UHWI does not have the facility for such an operation which even makes the transfer much more necessary.

Persons interested in donating to Kaylan’s cause can do so at the Jamaica National Bank in Halfway Tree at the account number 2094529120 or the Washington Boulevard branch of the National Commercial Bank with at the account number 134311479.

Where it concerns justice for what happened to the teen, the next hearing will be held on December 1st.
