Gramps Morgan “Still Blown Away” By Best Reggae Album Grammy Nomination
Roy “Gramps” Morgan, is now one of the Grammy Nominees after the production of his last album, “Positive Vibration”, which he did in collaboration with Nashville Producer Johnny Reid and engineered by Grammy nominee Justin Cortelyou. Gramps was nominated alongside 5 other notable artistes namely Sean Paul, Etana, Spice, Soja and Jesse Royal whose great albums were also recognized by the Grammy awards academy.
“Positive Vibrations”, according to Gramps Morgan’s Biography, was an effort of two men who came together and coalesced a body of work to show the goodness that can emerge as a result of the partnership between the two individuals who come from different cultural and musical backgrounds. According to the singer who now lives with his family in Nashville, the album is very important as a musical tool, especially in a time where racism is very rampant.
Check out Gramps’ reactions after learning that he was nominated below.
Gramps was born on July 7, 1976, to experienced Reggae Artiste Denroy Morgan, who coached his children in music, organising them in a band. It was not until the year 2009 that the members of the Morgan Heritage group decided that they would go off on their solo journeys which resulted in the project “2 Sides Of My Heart”, which landed him on a tour with India Arie and even made him appear on the Good Morning America show.
Since then the singer has won a total of three Grammy awards and was nominated on several occasions. His first was for the “Strictly Roots” album released by Morgan Heritage in 2016, Avrakedabra released in 2017 and for his and the group’s contribution to Sting and Shaggy’s album 44/876 in 2018.
The most recent winner of the coveted award was Toots and The Maytals in 2020 with the “Got To Be Tough” album while Koffee won back in 2019 with her “Rapture” project.
As inspiration for his music, Gramps stated that while growing up he used to listen to a lot of old Reggae and soul music which impacted his sound. The singer also states that Country music was one of his favourite genres to listen to, and it is evident how the genre played an important role in his years of music as Nashville is big on the genre.
The voting for the final round will kick off on December 6, 2021, and will go on to the 5th of January, 2022 whereafter, the awards ceremony will be held at the STAPLES Center, Los Angeles on January 31st of 2022. Will we see the legendary singer get another Grammy on top of the 3 that he already has? We will just need to wait and see if his work will outdo the other big guns going up for the award.
