During a courtesy call with Prince William and his wife, Kate Middleton at the Jamaica House in Kingston today, March 23, Prime Minister Andrew Holness announced that the country plans to “move on” from the British monarchy and intends to become a republic.
“Jamaica is as you would see a country that is very proud of our history and very proud of what we have achieved. We are moving on and we intend to attain in short order … our goals and fulfill our true ambitions as an independent, developed, prosperous country,” PM Holness declared to the Royals.
The leader of the island highlighted that there are unresolved issues between the two countries and that is evident based on the mixed reactions from persons on Tuesday, March 22, which stemmed from their arrival. He further added that “your presence gives an opportunity for these issues to be placed in context, put front and centre and to be addressed as best we can.”
There has been bipartisan support for Jamaica to remove the Queen as head of state and the protest that occurred yesterday, March 22, was aimed at having the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge take responsibility for the British monarchy’s role in slavery and apologize as well as pay reparations to the country.
Furthermore, following the decision by Barbados on November 21, 2021, to remove the Queen as head of state, PM Holness had announced a month later that, “there is no question that Jamaica has to become a republic”.
