Female Student Sexually Assaulted On UWI, Mona Campus
The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona reported that a female student was sexually assaulted in a bathroom after 2:00 p.m. while on campus on Thursday, May 5.
Details of the alleged abuse are that the student went to the bathroom in the Annex and Senate buildings, which are reportedly near the University’s administrative block. The victim was then approached and sexually assaulted by a man.
A report was subsequently made to the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) and an ongoing investigation is underway along with the University’s Campus Security Unit.
In a recently released statement, Deputy Principal Professor Ian Boxill declared that the “The well-being of our student has been our priority since the occurrence of the incident and the campus has taken steps to provide all the necessary psychosocial support that is critical at this time”.
Since the incident, bathrooms in certain locations of the University have been closed.
