Jamaica’s Murder Rate Up By 4.1%

The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) released the latest crime statistics showing a comprehensive list of the serious crimes report recorded on the island for the period January 1 – May 14, 2022, compared to the same period last year.

The report highlighted the 14 parishes and the total amount of murders that were recorded in each. For the 2022 period, Jamaica recorded a total of 534 murders, which is an increase of 4.1% when compared to 513 in 2021.

The following parishes topped the list with the total number of murders for the period under review: St. James (92), Westmoreland (56), St. Catherine South (38) and Clarendon (26).

Meanwhile, St. Mary showed the most significant percentage increase in homicides with only having 3 recorded for 2021, whereas, having 18 for 2022. This figure is a whopping 500% increase in murders for the parish.

For shootings, 418 were recorded for 2022 compared to 474 for the corresponding year, which is a 11.8% decrease. Manchester, St. Elizabeth and St. Catherine North recorded the most significant increases of 112.5%, 100% and 52% respectively.

The greatest decline in shootings is from the Portland parish with 50%.

Other serious crimes such as rape declined by 16.4%, robberies declined by 3.7% and break-ins increased by 6.8%.
