Drake Owes Sean Paul?
It is well known that many overseas artistes dabble in Dancehall which they not only receive praises for but also awards, however, the Dancehall genre remains smothered under the global leading genres in the music industry, and Sean Paul, one of the greatest international dancehall and reggae influencers, believes that the overseas entertainers who use the sound are not giving credit to its origin.
During a TMZ interview, Sean Paul was faced with the question if he has ever received gratitude from Canadian rapper Drake who was influenced by his music in earlier years of his success.
The 49-year-old entertainer informed TMZ that he has not received acknowledgement for his impact on Drake’s music, but noted the “Hotline Bling” singer collaborated and continues to work with Popcaan which is definitely great.
“My thing is that I always got criticized when I criticize these Pop artistes or Hip Hop people or R & B people that did our style of music without saying it’s the style of reggae/dancehall,” he stated. “Cause I think I got to a level where it was really huge and… I represented the culture, so why are we skipping the genre, why are we saying oh this is so and so’s new single, it’s innovative. No, it’s not. To me, it’s a dancehall singel.”
As he listed Drake, Rihanna and Ed Sheran as artistes who use the dancehall sound, he stressed that he did not like that the public is unaware that the music they are listening to is dancehall which originates from Jamaican singers.
