Admired Dancehall and Reggae artiste Jeffery Campbell, most popularly known by his stage moniker Agent Sasco, is among the many slated to be awarded national honours this year. He will receive the honour for his outstanding contribution to music, positive pro-social message to adolescents, and philanthropy and will be initiated into the Order of Distinction (OD) as a rank officer.
The Order of Distinction is Jamaica’s sixth highest honour and is awarded to any citizen who exhibits exceptional and indispensable services to Jamaica, as well as any citizen of a country besides Jamaica who also displays these qualities.
Throughout his career, Sasco has collaborated with many renowned local and international artistes; namely Kendrick Lamar, Kanye West, Beres Hammond and Buju Banton. He has released over 350 singles and four albums (Infiltration [2005], Gully Sit’n [2007], Theory of Reggaetivity [2016], and Hope River [2018]).
Beyond studio work, Sasco is a brand ambassador for Recycling Partners of Jamaica and has worked with the male wards at the Metcalfe Street Secure Juvenile Remand Centre in Kingston (with the help of his Banks of the Hope Foundation) to create a recording studio.
Leonard Howell, who is the founder of the Rastafarian movement, will also be granted an OD as well as orator and storyteller Dr. Amina Blackwood-Meeks and jazz luminary Dr. Myrna Hague-Bradshaw and Lord Creator (born Kendrick Randolph) for his community service and development of Jamaican music.
Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange, Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, and jazz great Monty Alexander will be named as members of the Order of Jamaica (OJ), the fifth highest honour in the country. For excellent contribution to acting, Sheryl Lee Ralph, who is a cultural ambassador for Jamaica and greatly advanced efforts in the international film industry, will also be presented with an honorary OJ.
