Jamaica Records 8% Increase in Murders
The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) published its serious crimes report for the period January 1 to October 29, 2022 and the corresponding period in 2021, which indicates that the country recorded an 8% increase in murders since year.
A total of 1,294 homicides have reportedly been committed, an increase from 1,202 for the comparative year.
The parish of Trelawny recorded the highest percentage increase (93%) for murders, with a climb from 15 to 29.
When compared to the corresponding year, St. James recorded the most significant number of murders for the period with a figure of 178. Followed by Westmoreland with 125, St. Catherine North with 121, St. Andrew South with 119 and St. Catherine South with 104.
More so, shooting incidents decreased by 6% from 1,062 to 1001, with St. Elizabeth recording the highest number from 12 to 30.
Rape has also declined by 12%, from 386 to 339 when compared to the corresponding period in 2021.
Meanwhile, robbery increased by 21%, from 632 to 763 when compared to the same period.
