Following their 1-0 loss to the Reggae Girlz on Thursday, the Paraguayans bounced back in the second round of their international friendlies against Jamaica to defeat the Girlz 2-1 on Sunday.
During their last meeting at the Montego Bay Sports Complex in Catherine Hall, Paraguayan goalkeeper Alicia Bobadilla kept the Girlz at bay for much of the match until 63rd-minute substitute Alysson Swaby secured a winning goal for the Girlz in stoppage time. The Reggae Girlz enjoyed a 1-0 victory on day one of their planned two-day international friendlies, with hopes of improving on that performance during Sunday’s finale. However, Sunday night’s match at the National Stadium in Kingston saw Jamaica down by two goals at half-time.
Paraguay’s Fabiola Sandoval scored the South American nation’s first goal in the 16th minute, with teammate Ramona Martinez netting their second not long after in the 34th minute. Women’s Super League Player of the Month and Reggae Girlz captain Khadija Shaw provided Jamaica with a much-needed first goal in the 62nd minute via a penalty awarded following a handled ball. But with the Girlz unable to secure an equaliser, the match closed 2-1.
Both the Girlz and Paraguay used the games for their FIFA preparations. After qualifying for the FIFA Women’s World Cup for a historic second time, the Reggae Girlz will face France and Brazil in the group stage of the World Cup next summer. Paraguay, who are fighting for a spot in their first World Cup, are currently in the process of preparing for 2023’s play-off tournament, which will decide the final three qualifiers for the Women’s World Cup.
