PM Holness Hands Over 50 Garbage Trucks and 10 Motorcycles to NSWMA – Watch Video
On Wednesday, November 30, Prime Minister Andrew Holness officially handed over a total of 50 new trucks and 10 motorcycles valued at approximately US$6.9 million to the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA).
During the handing-over ceremony held at the National Heroes Park in Kingston, PM Holness noted that the acquisition of these additional vehicles will drastically improve the increasing demand for the collection of garbage in the country.
According to the Minister, there are approximately 129 NSWMA garbage trucks now available on the island. He advised that the 50 new fleets were manufactured in China and purchased from Tankweld Limited. It was also noted that the delay in acquiring the additional trucks was due to supply chain issues, which interrupted the production schedule.
Twelve of the 50 trucks will be assigned to the Western Parks and Markets Waste Management Limited; 10 to Metropolitan Parks and Market Waste Management Limited; 10 to Southern Parks and Markets Waste Management Limited; 10 to North Eastern Parks and Markets Waste Management Limited.
The balance of 8 trucks will be used to form part of a roving team (constantly moving from one area or place to another) dubbed “Strategically Working to Enforce and Enhance Public Cleansing Operations and Programmes” (SWEEP COP).
Meanwhile, the Minister of Finance Dr. Nigel Clarke advised that for the 2023/2024 fiscal year, 50 additional trucks are slated for arrival in the country.
