Price Hike For Rio Grande Rafters
Amid the rise in popularity of rafting in Jamaica, the Tourism Product Development Company (TPDCo), which oversees rafting on the Rio Grande, has announced a rise in the costs of rafting on the river.
According to Lionel Myrie, the TPDCo Director for Product Development and Community Tourism, the new rafting rates are the only means of providing legal raft operators with an increase in payouts obtained from the trips that they offer.
Myrie disclosed that the decision to grant increases to legal raft operators on the Rio Grande was made in an attempt to reduce illegal rafting activity at the popular tourist destination and aid in offsetting operational costs.
The new rates took effect today and will see short rafting trips rise from $6,000 to $10,000, with long trips increasing by $4,700 to rise from its original $7,300 to $12,000.
Customers have been advised to make payments at the Rafters Rest or Berrydale offices when visiting the Rio Grande.
