According to a report, the shooting transpired just before 11:00 p.m. when two men rode up on a motorcycle and opened fire just outside the venue that was hosting Lennox ‘Peter’ Powell’s annual gospel concert, which was organised in honour of his June death.

“It is a yearly event that is always peaceful with a fun day. The information that we have so far is that two men on a bike rode up minutes to 11:00 p.m. and opened fire indiscriminately at persons standing outside the venue,” McCalla told the Jamaica Observer.

Following the shooting, a woman and four others were taken to the hospital with gunshot injuries, but they were admitted in stable condition.

McCalla further stated that no motive for the shooting has been determined by the police yet, and any events leading up to New Year’s Day may be prohibited.

Speaking on this, he said, “There is a strong possibility that there will be a ban on events from now leading to New Year’s Eve. This will be done on a case-by-case assessment. Intelligence will have to be assessed, reassessed and we will do a review of the decision within the first week of January.”
