Kingston College and Edwin Allen Triumph at Boys and Girls Championships 2024
Saturday night, March 23, the curtains came down on the much-anticipated ISSA/Grace Kennedy Boys and Girls Championships 2024, marking an end to an exhilarating display of young athletic talent in Jamaica. The championships, known affectionately as ‘Champs’, saw Kingston College (KC) and Edwin Allen High School reigning supreme in the boys’ and girls’ categories, respectively, amidst fierce competition and high expectations.
Kingston College, a powerhouse in Jamaican schoolboy athletics, continued their dominance from Friday, carrying their lead into the final night of the event. Their exceptional athletes put on stellar performances, culminating in KC securing their third consecutive title in the Boys section. The final tally saw Kingston College at the top with 335 points, a comfortable lead over their closest rival, Jamaica College, JC amassed 278 points.
Calabar High School followed in third place with 194 points, while Excelsior High and St. Jago rounded off the top five with 122 and 111.5 points, respectively.
On the Girls’ side, Edwin Allen High School demonstrated why they are considered a titan in the field of track and field, maintaining their lead from the previous day to clinch victory on the final night. The competition was notably fierce, but Edwin Allen emerged victorious with 335.5 points, narrowly edging out Hydel High School, Hydel scored 326 points. St. Jago secured the third spot with 171 points, followed by Homewood and Wolmers Girls with 149 and 128.5 points, respectively, from the 46 events scored.
The championships were a testament to the dedication, hard work, and talent of the young athletes who participated. Notably, both Kingston College and Edwin Allen High School finished the championships with a similar point tally, highlighting the level of competition and excellence both schools brought to the track.
However, the girls’ side of the championships was particularly competitive, with Edwin Allen winning by a slim margin of 9.5 points, showcasing the close contests and the depth of talent among the participating schools.
As the ISSA/Grace Kennedy Boys and Girls Championships 2024 concluded, it not only celebrated the victories of Kingston College and Edwin Allen High School but also underscored the rich tradition of athletics in Jamaica, a breeding ground for the world’s top athletes. Notably, Asafa Powell and Elaine Thompson-Herah amongst others were present at the Championships.
