A mother from Bronx, New York, is facing multiple charges following the death of her daughter, who the authorities say was hung by her wrists and beaten to death. Six-year-old Jelayah Eason Branch was discovered deceased by the police on Sunday in her mother’s apartment. The home has been described as a filthy “house of horrors.”
According to reports from the New York Post, Jelayah was found malnourished, and her body was bruised. The city medical examiner’s office has since ruled her death a result of malnourishment, blunt force injuries, positional asphyxia, and child abuse.
District Attorney Darcel Clark disclosed in a news release that the child was allegedly hanged by her wrists and beaten by her mother, 27-year-old Lynija Eason, with a hard object. Eason has been accused of abusing the child for weeks before her death, starting on March 1.
“For weeks before she succumbed, Jelayah knew only pain and hunger, allegedly committed by her own mother,” Clark stated.
Following Jelayah’s death, Eason’s two surviving children were removed from the home. Their mother has been charged with three counts of endangering the welfare of a child, first-degree manslaughter, second-degree manslaughter, and second-degree murder.
Eason was remanded and is scheduled to appear in court on June 26.
