Rapper NBA YoungBoy, legal name Kentrell DeSean Gaulden, appeared in a Utah courtroom on Monday, pleading guilty to his role in a prescription drug fraud ring. The 25-year-old, known for his massive streaming success, faced 46 charges in Logan District Court.
Ultimately, he admitted guilt to two counts of felony identity fraud, two felony forgery counts, and six misdemeanor charges of unlawful pharmacy conduct. Remaining charges were settled with a “no contest” plea as part of a deal that reduced his felonies to misdemeanors.
Gaulden was ordered to pay a $25,000 fine and avoid state prison but faces 27 months in federal prison for related offenses. Following his sentence, he will serve five years of supervised federal probation.
The rapper is set to do about one and a half year behind bars, however, if he violates his probation he can easily be slapped with a 5 year sentence.
“This is a good deal for him,” an attorney noted after the sentencing, highlighting the unique multi-jurisdictional nature of the case. State prosecutor Ronnie Keller called it “a smaller cog in the bigger wheel” of justice.
Judge Spencer Walsh acknowledged YoungBoy’s talent and expressed hope for his future success. “I don’t want you to be robbed of your potential due to addiction struggles,” Walsh said, urging the rapper to make the most of his opportunities post-incarceration.
