Prime Minister (PM) Andrew Holness addressed the shocking news that one of Jamaica’s very own young artiste, Skeng, was banned from future performances at public events in Guyana due to his violent music, as well as, his “vulgar and lawless behaviour”.

In addressing patrons at the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Area Two Council Meeting in Sydenham, St Catherine on Sunday, June 12, Holness expressed that he is “embarrassed” about this ban.

“It is an embarrassment to me when another country say I don’t want your artiste in my country,” he said.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister noted that he is concerned about the type of music being put forward by the entertainers and went on to plead with Jamaicans to not allow a certain type of music to define them. He then supported this point by referring to some trending songs today such as Skillibeng’s “Whap Whap” and Brysco’s “Ensure”.

“You know Whap Whap and Chap Chap and Ensure and all a dem. All a those things have their place, but they can’t define us. We should not allow that to define us,” stated Holness.

This statement from PM Holness comes following a recent announcement made by Guyana’s Public Security Minister, Robeson Benn, in which he declared that Skeng was banned from performing at public events in the country.

“No artiste like Skeng will ever come again into this country under the signature of any person from the Ministry of Home Affairs or from the Guyana Police Force,” Robeson stated at the opening of the Community Relations Department of the Guyana Police Force.

On May 27, Skeng performed at his “Baderation” concert in Guyana and while performing ‘Protocol’, a hit collaboration that featured the incarcerated deejay Tommy Lee Sparta, multiple gunshots were fired throughout the venue.

This resulted in the performance ending prematurely and also a mini stampede from party patrons who attempted to seek cover from the gunfire.
