Asafa Powell who was the reigning 100m champion and World’s fastest man before Usain Bolt replaced him, believes Jamaican’s should not criticize the athletes when they do not win or get medals after competing at the international championships.
He said, the athletes are not being paid by anyone, they go to competitions to win and earn a living, and if they lose they are very disappointed. They don’t need any more pressure.
Over the years Jamaicans have caused some athletes to feel pressured when they criticize them on social media. Asafa wants this to stop, as many of the critics are not doing much for the country and the athletes are trying very hard to make Jamaica proud.
At the end of the Tokyo Games, Jamaican athletes won a total of 9 medals finishing 5th in the track and field section while overall, Jamaica finished the Olympics in an impressive 21st position.
