Bail Extended Until 2024 for Kaylan Dowdie’s Alleged Attackers
The case of Kaylan Dowdie that sparked national outrage in 2020 has been postponed until February 20, 2024, after the five women who allegedly beat her unconscious had their bail extended today, November 6.
Reports state that the women: Timone Williams, Nadine Aldridge, Shackeena McLeod, Yoland Vassell, and Crysian Lewis appeared in the Home Circuit Court before Justice Vaughn Smith. They are facing the charges of wounding with intent and unlawful wounding.
One of the accused, Vassell, has secured the services of one of Jamaica’s high-profile attorneys, Peter Champagnie, while McLeod is being represented by Shamar Hanson. The other women have been given a mention date to appear with their legal representation.
Reportedly, Hanson motioned to have McLeod’s bail condition of reporting to the station daily be lessened due to her financial instability from being unemployed, which was granted by the Judge.
In 2020, Dowdie attended a party in which she was reportedly brutally attacked by five women and left for dead. The then 17-year-old was rushed to the hospital where she spent almost 18 months.
She was also given a 1% chance of survival by doctors, however, in 2022, she was discharged from the hospital.
The trial is expected to begin when the women return to court in 2024.
