The opening numbers for Bob Marley: One Love are in, with the biopic exceeding its estimated opening and surpassing Sony’s latest superhero film, Madame Web.
The film, centred around the life of Jamaican Reggae legend Bob Marley, was released on Valentine’s Day.
According to reports from Deadline, Bob Marley: One Love was initially projected to earn approximately 12 million on its opening day, which would have exceeded the record for a movie playing on a midweek Valentine’s Day.
Bob Marley: One Love movie, as per the report, set a new record surpassing its original projection, earning $14 million in the US on opening day. The biopic racked up $4.9 million additionally from 10 overseas markets, including the U.K., France and Spain.
The total amount reported for its opening day worldwide is $19.4 million.
In addition to surpassing the previous record holder, The Vow, starring Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams, it also beat the latest installment in Sony’s Spiderman Universe, Madame Web, which opened with $6.05 million.
Despite critic ratings for Bob Marley: One Love being relatively low, audience scores have been high, with the movie earning an A CinemaScore, a 94% Rotten Tomatoes audience score, 5 stars on Screen Engine/Comscore’s PostTrak, and an 80% definite recommend.
The film is currently projected to make over $30 million over the next six days.
