BREAKING: Jamaica confirms first case of COVID-19, Coronavirus

Earlier today Monday, March 10th Jamaica Minister of Health and Wellness Dr. Christopher Tufton broke the unwelcome news at a media briefing in Kingston about 11am that the Island has tested and verified it’s first case of the Coronavirus.

Doctor Tufton stated that the patient who tested positive for the virus is a female Jamaican who return to Jamaica on the 4th of March after visiting the UK.

She was hospitalized on March 9th after showing symptoms, She has been in isolation since.

A clinical sample was collected and sent to the National Influenza Centre, where laboratory tests confirmed the diagnosis today.

Several efforts are reportedly on the way to contain the virus, including contact tracing, her close family and friends will be tested and isolated.

The hospital where she visited will also go under several checks by ministry officials. She is amitted at the University Hospital of the West Indies, the UHWI

All Jamaicans who have visited China, Italy, South Korea, Iran, Spain, France, Germany and Singapore in the last 14 days will have landing privileges in accordance with the law, but they will be subject to a health assessment and quarantine.

“Persons who do not have permanent residency or marriage exemptions in Jamaica will not be granted landing privileges at any of Jamaica’s ports of entry; if they have visited China, Italy, South Korea, Iran, Spain, France, Germany and Singapore in the last 14 days, ” the ministry said.

Non-Jamaicans who have marriage exemption and permanent residence who are landed and after visiting the restricted countries in the last 14 days will be subject to a health assessment and quarantine also.

a total of 4 Quarantine facilities are available islandwide.

It’s reported that the Coronavirus pandemic is expected to peek this winter.
