Jamaica’s Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw who plays for Manchester City as a striker clinched the prestigious title of the 2024 Football Writers’ Association(FWA) Women’s Footballer of the Year. This is the latest achievement in Shaw’s record-breaking campaign with Manchester City.

The 27-year-old secured an overwhelming 53 per cent of all votes cast, setting a new milestone for the most votes garnered in a women’s award category. Shaw surpassed strong competition from her City teammate Alex Greenwood and Chelsea’s Lauren James to claim the top spot.

The announcement was made on Friday via an Instagram post that has the caption, “@bun_bun10 has been named as the @fwaofficial Women’s Footballer of the Year! 🙌 Congratulations, Bunny! 🩵.”

Shaw’s season has been characterised by her outstanding performance on the field, having netted an impressive 21 goals in just 18 league appearances. Her contributions have played a pivotal role in propelling Gareth Taylor’s side towards contention for their first Women’s Super League title since 2016.

Shaw finished the 2022/23 season with a total of 31 strikes in all competitions, surpassing Nikita Parris’ record for the most goals scored across a single season by mid-March. Despite a foot injury sidelining her for City’s final two games of the WSL campaign, Shaw remains a strong contender for the coveted Golden Boot award, presented to the league’s top scorer.

With her injury, Shaw will also miss Jamaica’s upcoming two matches against Brazil on June 1 and June 4.

Shaw’s journey to success began three years ago when she made the switch from playing in France to joining Manchester City. Since then, she has consistently excelled, culminating in her record-breaking performance this season.
