American hip-hop artiste Chance the Rapper took a moment to pay homage to one of Jamaica’s most revered figures, Marcus Mosiah Garvey. The record producer and songwriter depicted his respect and admiration for the national hero by capturing a series of photographs during his trip to Jamaica.

Chance, legally named Chancelor Bennett, visited Kingston, where he snapped photos showing him standing near a wall adorned with a painting of Marcus Garvey and sitting in front of another structure embellished with large vessels sailing across the sea.

In the string of images that were shared on social media with only a star in the caption, Chance is also seen immersing himself in the history of the Jamaican activist with a pile of books spread out across a table.

This followed a picture of him viewing several volumes on the shelves with titles such as “UNITED STATES CIRCUIT COURT OF APPEALS MARCUS GARVEY VS UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.”

It is not the first time the Chicago native has shown appreciation for the Jamaican National Hero. The rapper hosted an event, the Black Star Line Festival, earlier this year in Ghana that was heavily inspired by the works of Marcus Garvey. The music festival is said to be only one of the artistic inspirations he found in Garvey, with the others being a music video and an album.

According to a report, Chance expressed his intentions to host the second edition of his Black Star Line Festival in Kingston, Jamaica, slated for next year.

In 1919, Marcus Garvey and the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) founded the Black Star Line, a shipping company that aimed to improve economic opportunities for black workers in North America, the Caribbean, and Africa.

The Black Star Line faced many challenges but became a symbol of Black economic achievement. The UNIA, led by Garvey, sought to establish a self-governed Black nation in Africa and became the largest mass movement in African-American history.
