For the first time in the history of logging storms, two storms are now in the tropical Atlantic in June after Tropical Storm Cindy formed behind Tropical Storm Bret.

Meteorologists reported unusual developments while noting that they were due to abnormally high sea temperatures. The presence of two storms in the Atlantic so close to the beginning of the hurricane season indicates an early and fierce start.

Typically, the season, which begins on June 1, reaches its peak activity between mid-August and mid-October, and the season concludes on November 30.

As of Friday morning, Tropical Storm Bret produced waves of up to 15 feet (4.5 metres) and has been impacting eastern Caribbean islands with winds and heavy rainfall. Its maximum sustained winds were 60 mph (95 kph).

The storm’s centre was west of St. Vincent and was moving west into open waters at 18 mph (30 kph). Initially, it was predicted that the storm would pass over St Lucia, but its course changed.

According to the Jamaica Gleaner, a catamaran carrying four people sank in Martinique during the storm, and officials were searching for the individuals who were reported to be aboard a lifeboat.

In St Vincent and the Grenadines, there were power outages, and 130 individuals had to seek shelter after their homes were damaged, with one being washed away. Also, in Barbados, there were over a dozen reports relating to damage across the island.

Due to the storm, airports, businesses, schools, and offices closed in St Vincent, St Lucia, Dominica, Martinique, and other islands around midday on Thursday. Many countries have been taking precautions in preparation for possible landslides and flooding as Bret continues to do damage.

Meanwhile, Cindy is expected to move to open waters in the northeast as a tropical storm.
