Drug King Pin El Chapo’s Wife Arrested in the US
The 31-year-old Emma Coronel Aispuro, who is a former beauty queen, was arrested in Virginia at Dulles International Airport and is scheduled to appear on Tuesday in federal court in Washington. She has dual citizenship in both Mexico and the United States and she is the wife of Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman
Her arrest is a new twist in the bloody, multinational saga that involves Guzman, who dramatically escaped prison in Mexico twice and that fed into a rumour that he and his family were now untouchables, he was extradited to the USA in 2017 and he is now serving life in prison.
Now his wife has been charged with helping him to run his criminal empire. She has two young daughters with him. Coronel was charged with conspiracy to distribute heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine and marijuana in the US in a single-count criminal complaint.
Coronel’s attorney, Jeffrey Lichtman decided not to comment on Monday night.
She was also charged for planning to assist with another escape.
It is alleged that Guzman is Mexico’s most powerful drug lord, it is said that he ran a cartel that is responsible for smuggling large amounts of cocaine and other drugs into the USA during the 25-years he has reigned, according to prosecutors. They also said his hitmen, was ordered to kidnap, torture and kill people who got into his way.
His prison breaks were the stuff of legends and caused serious questions to be raised about whether Mexico’s justice system was able to hold him accountable.
He escaped through an entry under the shower in his cell in one case to a 1.6-Kilometre long or milelong lighted tunnel on a motorcycle that was on rails. Prosecutors explained that the planning for that escape was extensive, and his wife played an important role.
The Court papers charged that Coronel had worked with a witness and Guzman’s sons, who has began cooperating with the government in the USA,.
The court papers explained the plot that involved buying a piece of land close to the prison, an armored truck, firearms and smuggling to him a GPS watch and making it possible to pinpoint his exact whereabouts so they could construct the tunnel with the entry point in a position that was accessible to him.
Life behind bars was the sentence Guzman got in 2019.
Coronel, the ex-beauty queen who won a beauty contest in her teens, would attend Guzman’s trial regularly, even when the testimonies given would implicate her in his prison escapes.
The two, have a 30years age difference, and they have been together since approximately 2007. In 2011 their twin daughters were born.
In 2013, her father, Ines Coronel Barreras, was arrested along with one of his sons and many other men who were in a warehouse where hundreds of pounds of marijuana was found across the border from Douglas, in Arizona. The US Treasury had announced financial sanctions against him for his alleged involvement in drug trafficking, months earlier.
Guzman was arrested again following his escape, but his wife lobbied the Mexican government in order to improve the prison conditions of her husband. After his 2019 conviction, she also decided to launch a clothing line in his name.
The Drug Enforcement Administration’s former chief of international operations, Mike Vigil revealed that Coronel was involved in the drug trade since she was a girl and knew the inner workings of the Sinaloa cartel operations so she could be willing to cooperate.
He believes she has a huge motivation, that is her twin daughters.
