George Floyd’s Family Files $250M Lawsuit Against Kanye for Defamatory Comments about Death
On a recent episode of Drink Champs, Ye being himself, spoke openly and unapologetically, whilst making controversial claims about George Floyd’s death. This allegation by the Donda album hitmaker has since resulted in a multi-million lawsuit being filed by Floyd’s family for the defamatory comments.
Floyd is an African-American man who was killed by a police officer (Derek Chauvin) in 2020 after being accused of attempting to purchase goods with a counterfeit $20 bill. This particular case made headlines and brought forth several accusations of police brutality and racism when a video surfaced showing Chauvin kneeling on Floyd’s neck, killing him in the process.
During the interview, Kanye claimed that Floyd did not die from the convicted ex-cop’s misconduct, but an overdose of fentanyl.
Roxie Washington, the mother of Floyd’s daughter (now 8 years old), filed a lawsuit totalling $250 million against Kanye for the comments made in relation to his cause of death. A release mentioned that the lawsuit includes allegations of “harassment, misappropriation, defamation, and infliction of emotional distress.”
The proceeding is being made on behalf of the child who is the only recipient of her father’s real estate.
Nuru Witherspoon, the attorney representing the family on behalf of Washington stated, “the interests of the child are priority. George Floyd’s daughter is being retraumatized by Kanye West’s comments and he’s creating an unsafe and unhealthy environment for her.”
With the emotion-filled case looming ahead, a cease-and-desist notice was issued to Ye by the family for the comments.
Reportedly, the release mentioned that the lawsuit states, “Kanye West knowingly made blatantly false statements about George Floyd’s death to promote his brands, and increase marketing value and revenue for himself, his business partners, and associates.”
The Shade Room posted about the lawsuit, and someone commented, “I hope she that and more. This isn’t different from the Alex Jones mess,” and another individual claimed, “somethings ye you just gotta keep in that brain of yours 🙏🏼.”
