Like many Jamaican artistes, he grew up singing in church but he was also influenced by his father’s parties. Despite his parents’ different religious beliefs, both saw his potential, and the artiste began honing his skills at the music studio at an early age.

After winning a talent competition in Portmore, he made his debut on the Sting stage in 2024 and his debut single the following year launched his career in Reggae. His stage name is inspired by a habit he had of tying a shirt around his head and twisting his chin hair like an Egyptian pharaoh.

The 41-year-old’s versatile musical style allows him to deliver conscious Roots Reggae singles like Serious Times, as well as dancehall-influenced songs like his hit Hold You. On Tuesday, the artiste in question, Gyptian, shared a photo of himself wearing a neon green ski mask on his Instagram page which has more than 206,000 followers.

Captioning the photo, Gyptian, born Windel Beneto Edwards, wrote, “If it wasn’t me who else could it be hahaha.”
