“The government doesn’t seem to be in control,” says a reporter while talking about the unrest currently taking place in Haiti. As per reports, several gangs merged to attack two prisons causing thousands of prisoners to be freed over the weekend.
“Haiti’s armed groups have now united to say the prime minister must go,” the reporter also stated. The demand from the armed gangs is for the prime minister’s resignation.
In pursuit of total control, armed gangs have set up several barricades across the country, mainly in the capital.
As a result of the ongoing unrest, many bodies are left lying on roads, some with their hands tied behind their backs. To quell the current spike in crime and violence, a state of emergency has been declared by the government.
“The police were ordered to use all legal means at their disposal to enforce the curfew and apprehend all offenders,” reads apart of a statement from Finance Minister Patrick Boivert. Boivert is currently serving as acting prime minister in the absence of Haiti’s current leader, Ariel Henry.
Prime Minister Ariel Henry is not currently in the country and may have issues getting back into the country, per reports. Prime Minister Henry left the country recently to try and get support overseas via a multinational peace initiative.
Since the assassination of President Jovenel Moise back in 2021, things have been slowly getting from bad to worse in Haiti with a reported 80% of the capital Port-au-Prince being controlled by armed gangs.

In reaction to the latest events, one person questioned, “The thing I’ve never understood is how the Dominican Republic keeps all the chaos from Haiti out of their country, when they’re part of the same island. The U.S. should get advice from the Dominicans on how to secure their border.”
Another stated, “Could you imagine living there. Its unbelievable how an entire country is completely controlled by gangs.”
