Haiti’s Death Toll Passes 300 after Earthquake Today

As reported by CBS News minutes ago, at least 304 people have been confirmed killed while 1,800 people were injured and hundreds still missing after an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 struck about 7:30 this morning, southwest in Haiti.
Most of the damage was done in Haiti and according to the US Geological Survey, the epicenter of the quake was approximately 125 kilometers or 78 miles west of the capital of Port-au-Prince.
The PM of Haiti, Ariel Henry reported that aids are being rushed to affected areas where towns were destroyed and health care institutions overwhelmed with the rapid influx of patients. Henry has announced a one-month state of emergency for the entire nation and detailed that he will be trying to figure out the extent of damage done by the quake before asking for international help.
Prime minister Henry also stated, “The most important thing is to recover as many survivors as possible under the rubble”, “We have learned that the local hospitals, in particular, that of Les Cayes, are overwhelmed with wounded, fractured people.”
Several Latin American countries are preparing to send humanitarian aid to Haiti however it’s still early hours.
In Jamaica, the quake was felt across the island with reports so far from Kingston and St Andrew, St Catherine, St James, St Elizabeth, St Ann, Westmoreland, Trelawny, Manchester and Clarendon.
The Bahamas, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Puerto Rico, Turks and Caicos Islands, United States Minor Outlying Islands, and Cuba felt the shocks from the major earthquake.
