Isat Buchanan Talks On Being Granted A Stay, Making Him Able To Continue Representing Vybz Kartel – Watch Video
Vybz Kartel’s attorney at law, Isat Buchanan was granted a stay by the Court of Appeal until the outcome of his appeal against the suspension imposed by the Disciplinary Committee of the General Legal Council.
Buchanan was granted permission to resume his practice in the courtroom during the interim period after his initial suspension was described by the Court of Appeal as excessive
Buchanan was placed on suspension for two years by the General Legal Counsel of the Department of Justice earlier this month following his comments made on social media regarding the Director of Public Prosecutions, Paula Llewellyn, in which he quoted a few lyrics from Vybz Kartel’s song Menace.
The stay will enable Buchanan to continue practising law and allow him to represent dancehall artiste Vybz Kartel, who is appealing his murder conviction at the United Kingdom Privy Council as he seeks to be released from prison in 2024.
Earlier, Buchanan pleaded guilty to violating the ethics rules that guide the conduct of attorneys authorised to practice in Jamaica. Aside from that, he also admitted that he violated the Canons of Professional Ethics Rules of the legal profession.
As part of the litigation process, a case management conference is scheduled for July next year, and a date for a hearing of the appeal for Buchanan will be determined following the conference.
