Jamaica Wins Debut Game at Pan Continental Curling Championships in Canada

On Saturday, Jamaica’s National Curling Team won their opening match at the Pan Continental Curling Championships in Lacombe, Alberta, Canada.

The Caribbean team managed to beat Asian team Kazakhstan in a close match that ended 9-8 to Jamaica. The Jamaicans are playing in the tournament for the first time, four years after the team was established in 2020 by Ben Kong.

The competition which started on Saturday, October 26, will last for a week, ending on Saturday, November 2.

Team member Luke Samuels took to Instagram on Saturday to inform the public of the groundbreaking achievement. He stated, “Kazakhstan 8 – 9 Jamaica. First game, first win in the world Pan Continental Curling Championships for Curling Jamaica 🥌🇯🇲.”

Luke also shared a picture of the team and the game stats.

After Kazakhstan Jamaica will play against Hong Kong, then Kenya. They will go on to face Brazil, India, Saudi Arabia, Puerto Rico, the Philippines, Qatar, and Nigeria in the coming days, with the semi-final and final scheduled for November 1 and 2.

The four-member men’s team will see Luke Samuels, Don Johnston, Andrew Walker, and Ian Robertson (skip/captain) attempt to make history in this year’s championships.

Jamaica’s Men’s Curling Team

Curling Jamaica’s women’s team will also compete at the Pan Continental, with the four-woman team consisting of Margot Sheperd-Spurgeon, Medeline Spurgeon, Stephanie Chen, and Alexandra Marriot.

The women’s curling team is aiming to top their 2023 Pan Continental Curling B Championships performance that saw them walk away with silver.
