The 2024 Olympic Games which ran from July 26 to August 11 has completed and Jamaica managed to take home only one gold medal despite hauling in 4 gold medals in 2020. As expressed by many Jamaicans, this was a poor Olympics for the island plagued by injuries to several top athletes such as Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Shericka Jackson.

Jamaica was hoping to get a 7th medal in the final race of the Olympics, in the Women’s 4x400m relay after going into the final with one of the quickest times, however, that hope was cut short after the baton was knocked from the hand of one of the Jamaicans as she made her way around the curve.

As a result, Jamaica finished the Paris Olympics with two(2) Bronze, three(3) Silver and One(1) Gold. Roje Stona got gold in men’s discus throw, Shanieka Ricketts got silver in women’s triple jump, Rajindra Campbell got bronze in Men’s shot put, Kishane Thompson got silver in men’s 100m.

Wayne Pinnock got silver in the men’s long jump, and Rasheed Broadbell got bronze in the men’s 110m hurdles. With this low medal count, Jamaica was ranked 34th in the medal count, USA won the most models, a total of 123 with 38 gold medals finished in 2nd place while China who won 39 gold medals sits at number one.

This means that Roje Stona is the only Jamaican who won the $50,000 prize given to each gold medalist, an initiative started at Parisngames. Based on a Google search on July 28, 2024, $50,000(USD) equals around $7,800,000(JMD). Notably, Jamaica won 6 Gold medals at the 2016 Olympics that Brazil hosted, this was the most Gold medals won by the island at an Olympics.

Jamaica’s best medal haul at the Olympic Games was in London 2012, where 13 medals were won, consisting of 4 gold, 5 silver and 4 bronze.

Jamaica first participated in the Olympic Games back in 1948, so far, the island has hauled 87 medals in athletics. This year, many Jamaicans are looking forward to the team bringing home at least 10 medals.
