Jamaican Woman Infected with Covid-19 says “I don’t think they’re doing their best”

Last Friday a young woman who was recently listed among the three new cases when she tested positive for the COVID-19 (novel coronavirus disease) in Jamaica says she is upset because of the lack of urgency with which the health authorities treated her.

The woman’s, positive status was confirmed early Friday and she arrived on the island last Tuesday morning from New York.

She admitted feeling ill before she boarded the flight but said she was self-medicating.

She had a fever and headache because she had a cold and her throat was hurting, she revealed on Friday afternoon.

“I drank garlic and ginger tea, but I was doing that before because I didn’t want to get sick. Plus, I was taking vitamin C and drinking orange juice,” the woman said. She had called the health authorities at 11:00 am that day, and reported that she had a fever, headache, sore throat, and she was feeling weak. She reported that she was told to stay indoors and she was not to go to the hospital or any medical center”.

“They told her that they would send an ambulance for her and she should stay home, but no one showed up,“ she added.

She called the health authorities again and then she was being told where in Kingston she should go when her credit expired.

Eventually, she was contacted by the health authorities, and after speaking with them, she found her way to the hospital by herself, where she was admitted and tested.

On Thursday she said she had no fever, pain or headache but was very worried for her three children who were at home and they were short on food.

She received the test result showing that she was positive for the novel coronavirus.

The health authorities told her, they wanted to have her children and their father quarantined at the hospital.

The woman, who was placed in a room by herself, also said she had contrasting experiences with nurses at the hospital. As one nurse was scornful. She put water in a basin, then kick it to her and said ‘no disrespect’, “but there are three other nurses who have been kind to me”, she added.

Later that Friday, she said the treatment improved and she had received vitamin C from a relative.

“I don’t think they’re doing their best. They took very long to respond to me.” She revealed when asked.
