Jamaican 400m runner Nickisha Pryce secured first place in the distance at the London Diamond League in England on Saturday. Despite slowing down moments before the end of the race, Pryce smashed her previous record, which she set at the NCAA National Division 1 Championships in June, claiming first place in 48.57s.

Pryce made her Diamond League debut at today’s meet at the Olympic Stadium. The twenty-three-year-old already held the title of national champion when she entered the race, with a personal best and national record of 48.89 seconds.

Pryce kicked off the race in lane 6, and while she was not the fastest out of the blocks, she soon overtook America’s Talishta Diggs and Great Britain’s Laviai Neilson in lanes 8 and 7, respectively.

The young athlete was left on the ground after storming to her new national record win. Polish runner Natalia Kaczmarek finished second in 48.90s, with the Netherlands’ Lieke Klaver taking third in 49.58s.

Not only is Pryce’s 48.57s a new national record, but the winning time also sees the young athlete set a new meet record and world-leading time that moves her up to 7th place on the all-time list.
