Jamaican and Manchester City striker Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw has been included on the prestigious 30-player shortlist for the 2024 Women’s Ballon d’Or, marking her second nomination for the award. This honour places her among the best female footballers globally and highlights her remarkable performance despite a challenging season.
Shaw recently returned from a broken leg injury but managed to make a significant impact on the pitch prior to the injury. She ended the season as Manchester City’s all-time leading goalscorer, with her milestone goal against Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium in March 2024.
The 27-year-old had an outstanding season in the Barclay’s Women’s Super League (WSL), where she shattered multiple goal-scoring records and won the WSL Golden Boot, scoring 21 goals in just 18 appearances.
Prime Minister of Jamaica, Andrew Holness, took to social media on Wednesday to highlight Shaw’s nomination, calling it a “monumental achievement for the Jamaican football star.” He congratulated her for her outstanding performance and contributions to the sport, a sentiment echoed by fans and fellow athletes.
Although Shaw has not publicly commented on the nomination, she acknowledged the news by sharing a post about the achievement on her Instagram stories. She is one of three Manchester City players nominated for the Ballon d’Or, alongside Yui Hasegawa and Lauren Hemp.
The winners will be announced at a ceremony in Paris on October 28, 2024.
Shaw’s accolades for the season include the PFA Players’ Player of the Year and the Football Writers’ Association (FWA) Women’s Footballer of the Year.
