Reggae Girlz Khadija Shaw scored a brilliant header during Manchester City Women’s opening match against Aston Villa in the FA Women’s Super League, but the club would suffer their first loss to Villa after previously holding an aggregate score of 17-0.
Both sides have gone through substantial changes over the summer, with City having to replace key players such as midfielder Keira Walsh, who made a record move to Barcelona after signing a £400,000 deal. Aston Villa, however, had the opportunity to elevate their team with notable players like forward Rachel Daly, who was instrumental in the club’s win on Sunday.
Alisha Lehmann would secure Villa’s first goal with a right-footed shot to the bottom left corner in the 22nd minute with an assist from Daly. Lehmann returned the favour minutes later when she provided Daly with an assist in the 32nd minute, and Daly superbly curled a shot into the top corner. With the first half coming to a close, midfielder Laura Coombs would claim City’s first goal in overtime with an assist from Shaw.
Shaw, rebounding from a missed attempt in the 49th minute, netted Man City’s second goal in the 53rd with a stunning header and an assist from Stephanie Houghton, who delivered an equally brilliant headed pass following a corner. Coombs would push City momentarily ahead with their third goal in the 55th minute, but Villa’s Kenza Dali would answer with an equaliser in the 58th, shooting from outside the box to the top left corner. Though they held 63% of the possession, Manchester City could not prevent their first opening day defeat in eight years, and Daly sealed the club’s loss after securing her second goal in the 76th minute, closing the match at 4-3.
