Manchester City W.F.C. successfully kicked off their 2022/2023 Champions League qualifying campaign by winning the first round match against Kazakhstan’s Tomiris-Turan 6-0, with Jamaica Reggae Girlz’s Khadija “Bunny” Shaw coming out of the game as top scorer with two goals.
Shaw set the winning tone early on in the match, scoring the opening goal in the fourth minute. This was followed by a brilliant header from the 24-year-old forward in the 21st with an assist from Chloe Kelly. The Gareth Taylor-led squad continued to dominate the first half of the match, with 22-year-old Lauren Hemp adding a third goal for the English club in stoppage time.
The game intensified in the second half, with the midfielder Vicky Losada netting the fourth goal for City in the 82nd minute. There was no question who the round one semi-final winners would be when Denya Castellanos added yet another goal for Man City from the penalty spot in the 89th minute. It was the 23-year-old’s first goal for the club after joining City in July. Tomiris-Turan’s goalkeeper Aytaj Sharifova’s own goal capped the team’s defeat, increasing the blistering margin of defeat the team was already suffering from and ending the game 6-0.
Thursday’s massive win places Manchester City once again against the team that knocked them out of the qualifying round of the Champions League last season, Real Madrid, who are fresh off their own 6-0 victory against Austria’s Sturm Graz. Both teams will clash on Sunday for a chance to progress to the second phase of qualifying matches.
