Scoring his first goal out of the six appearances he has made for Aston Villa’s 2022/2023 Premier League season, Leon Bailey secured an equaliser for his team, preventing them from a Manchester City defeat.
Coming off of a massive 6-0 victory against Nottingham Forest, Manchester City appeared to be in a prime position to take the win in Saturday’s match against Aston Villa. Fresh off of their 2-1 loss against Arsenal on Wednesday, Villa’s chances of defeating City appeared slim, especially with Man City’s £51m summer signing Erling Haaland, who had scored back-to-back hat-tricks against Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest.
Both teams were unable to secure a goal in the first half, but with 73% possession of the ball, City netted their first goal five minutes into the second half, thanks to the 22-year-old Haaland scoring his tenth goal in six games. Despite Man City continuing to apply pressure on Villa and midfielder Kevin De Bruyne nearly netting his 22-yard free-kick, Baily scored his first goal this season into the top corner, with an assist from midfielder Jacob Ramsey in the 74th minute.
With an equaliser secure, substitute Philippe Coutinho thought he had given Villa a win minutes later, but the goal was ruled offside by the referee. Nonetheless, Villa would fend off City for the remainder of the game, ending the match in a draw at 1-1, thus preventing Man City from taking the number one spot in the standings and took themselves out of the relegation zone at 19th place to 17th place.
