Manchester United Player Charged with Attempted Rape, Engaging in Controlling Behaviour and Assault
Manchester United footballer Mason Greenwood has been charged by the Greater Manchester Police (GMP) with attempted rape, engaging in controlling behaviour, and assault.
The 21-year-old professional player was first arrested in January 2022 following the October 22, 2021, allegation of rape and the December 2021 allegation of assault by a woman after images and videos were posted online. Additionally, the charge of controlling behaviour reportedly happened in November of 2018.
All three charges are relating to the same woman.
“Specialist rape prosecutors from CPS North West’s complex casework unit authorized the charges following a review of a file of evidence received from Greater Manchester Police,” said Janet Potter, Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS North West.
The accused was granted bail when arrested in January, however, reports state that he was again arrested on Saturday for allegedly breaching the conditions of his bail.
The Football Club has since released a statement on the matter, “Manchester United notes that criminal charges have been brought against Mason Greenwood by the Crown Prosecution Service. He remains suspended by the club, pending the outcome of the judicial process.”
Similarly, Greenwood lost his sponsorship with Nike and Electronic Arts removed him from active squads on its FIFA 22 game.
He is scheduled to appear at the Greater Manchester magistrate’s court on Monday, October 17.
