The People’s National Party (PNP) leader Mark Jefferson Golding sent out a stern warning to Prime Minister Andrew Holness during his speech at the St. Ann’s Bay Divisional Conference, he stated that if the JLP (Jamaica Labour Party) further postponed the local government elections now scheduled for 2024, he would be taking them to court.
According to Golding, who uploaded a part of his speech to social media on Tuesday, he is “warning the Andrew Holness led government that we will take them to court if the local government elections are postponed in February 2024.”
The opposition leader is known for taking shots at Holness and his decisions and during his speech he said, “In the run-up to passing the three strategic laws, prior to that, we had amended the constitution…to put local government in the constitution and the constitution says that there shall continue to be a system of democratic local governance…if dem feel dem can extend it again we are going to take dem to court.”
The leader of the PNP also mentioned that if the elections are further put off, the JLP would be in violation of “extending the term of the existing counsillors by 100 per cent.” He said that the courts would surely rule in his favour as another extension would be inconsistent with “a democratic system of government,” thus the JLP should take notice of his warnings to not drag out the coming elections.
