Mavado’s Son, Dante Brooks Sentencing Postponed To March 19
Son of Dancehall artiste Mavado alongside his co-accused appeared in court yesterday for their sentencing, however, the date has been postponed due to the admission of new information submitted to the court in the form of a victim impact statement.
Dante Brooks and Andre Hinds were both found guilty in January of this year, for the 2018 murder and arson, concerning Lorenzo Thomas in Cassava Piece.
The team of lawyers representing the accused are Peter Champagnie, QC; Oswest Senior-Smith; for Brooks and Tamika Harris for Hinds.
Champagnie argued to Justice Leighton Pusey, who abided over the case that the new information was brought in after the men were tried and so it would be unfair to have it submitted as evidence since it included further illegal acts, that were not mentioned in the first place.
Champagnie also said that it was the first time he is witnessing something of the sort in this Jurisdiction.
The judge eventually agreed that the document would have been unfair for submission, since the trial had already been done.
Justice Pusey advised the defence that in a case like this, however, the document should be analyzed properly with the Crown to ensure the matter is properly settled.
The new date that has been set for the sentencing of the two young men is March 19.
