American sprinter Noah Lyels believed that Jamaica’s Boys and Girls Championships are free to attend, hence the usually large turnouts. The World Champion was speaking on the Beyond the Record podcast, which was published on Thursday, when he claimed that the only reason the event is so well supported is that it does not cost to get in.
Lyles was talking about the upcoming Grand Slam track and field league, which is due to run from April to September 2025. The meet will kick off in Kingston, Jamaica from April 4-6 inside the National Stadium. Whose co-host was optimistic about the event getting a good turnout in Jamaica, Lyles felt otherwise and gave his reason.
“Everybody wants to talk about how great the Boys and Girls Champs is. Boys and Girls Champs is free. Have you ever seen the crowd at their national championships? That back row, actually almost beside the home stretch—none of that is full,” said the Olympic 100m champion.
As a video clip of Lyles making the comments began making rounds online, his fiancee, Jamaican athlete Junelle Bromfield distanced herself from his remarks, highlighting that it’s the first time she heard that the event is free to attend.
Bromfield wrote the following on her Instagram story, “Leave me out this one please because mi and unuh find out the same time !!!!!”

As per Issa’s website, the tournament which normaly starts on a Tuesday is only free on the first day while on Wednesday bleachers tickets go for $500, on Thursday it’s $1000, on Friday it’s $1000 for child and $1500 for adults, on the final day, Saturday it’s $1500 for child and $2500 for adults.
The Grand Stands ticket prices are expected to be higher.Being informed about presenting the wrong information to the public, Noah returned hours later with a video, shared to Instagram story, apologising for his mistake on the matter. He stated, “Unfortunately, I did make a comment that provided misinformation, I said that Boys and Girls Champs was free to attend and thankfully the community informed me that this is not the case, I’m sorry that I spread this misinformation, it was never my job to mislead… I just didn’t fact check enough.. thank you to everybody for informing me.”
