7 Billion Barrels? Oil Discovery in Jamaica is “Fake News” Says Daryl Vaz

Jamaica’s energy Minister Daryl Vaz took to social media Sunday night to rubbish claims that 7 Billion barrels of oil was found in Jamaica. The rumours started circulating in early July, however, picked up steam in August after the Olympics and Kartel’s release.

According to the rumours, the Jamaican government was keeping the discovery a secret and used Kartel’s release to overshadow the news.

Daryl Vaz via an X post, stated, “I have seen the many posts on social media and received WhatsApps and telephone calls in relation to the fake news circulating on social media in relation to the discovery of oil on our shores or off our shores. As minister, I can categorically state that there is no such thing, it is absolutely fake news.”

Check out his statement below:

British-based company United Oil Plc currently holds the licence to explore for oil and gas off Jamaica’s south coast. In an early 2024 report, up to 15 billion barrels of oil is anticipated to be in the region, however, getting to the oil is still a challenge, plus it’s unclear where exactly the oil is. The company has until 2028 to search and dig for oil.

Seemingly the preliminary news was taken out of context, fueled by Jamaicans wanting a way out of the hard living conditions locally.
