Plane Crashes in Russia Killing all 28 Passengers

A plane carrying 28 people crashed in the far east of the country and there were no survivors, rescue officials said. It was reported by the emergencies ministry, that the Antonov An-26 twin-engined turboprop was flying from the regional capital Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky to Palana and lost contact with air traffic control.

Sources stated that there was poor visibility and it is possible that this caused the plane to crash into a cliff as it prepared to land a second time.

The civil aviation in Russia said the emergencies ministry had dispatched a helicopter and also deployed teams on the ground after which the crash site was found.

An undated handout image of the small plane, before it’s crash was released by Russia’s Emergencies Ministry on July 6.

The ministry reported that 22 passengers and 6 crew members were on board, and the mayor of Palana, Olga Mokhireva was among the passengers.

The aircraft had been in service since 1982, accidents involving old planes are not uncommon in the region.
