An altercation between a police officer and members of the JDF (Jamaica Defence Force) turned physical when three JDF members ganged up on a passing JCF (Jamaica Constabulary Force) law enforcer who was stopped at a checkpoint in Denham Town, Kingston.
Circulating on social media is a video of the incident where it can be seen that the JCF officer, still in uniform, was being pushed by a member of the JDF, while another shouted, “when soldier stop yuh, yuh stop,” repeatedly.
The stand-off between the opposing law enforcement agencies was very aggressive and an unidentified soldier was also videoing the incident.
According to reports made, the episode took place at a JDF checkpoint in Denham Town, Kingston at around 8:00 p.m. on Sunday. The police, said to be a constable, was still in uniform and travelling in a private motor vehicle at the time.
Reports state that the incident was reported and the Denham Town police are looking into the case. The soldiers involved are being accused of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, assaulting a member of the constable, and assault at common law.
According to the Jamaica Star, the police constable was driving along the Hannah Street main road when he was stopped by JDF officers at a checkpoint. He was asked to step out of the vehicle and after doing so a verbal confrontation ensued, which led to the JCF constable being shoved in the chest three times.
It was also stated that one of the JDF members pointed a gun at the constable before other police joined the scene to defuse the situation.
The video on the internet was taken by citizens who were present and alerted to the incident by the shouting match. After the video was posted, many Jamaicans reacted with varied views.
Someone stated, “This nuh look good on both sides,” while another said, “Police always gwaan like dem run everything n bigger than everything you’re just a next man doing a poor job at the job.”
