Incarcerated R&B American singer Robert Sylvester Kelly, otherwise known as R. Kelly is fighting to have his sexual conviction overturned in the court ahead of the sentencing date scheduled for May 4, 2022.
The singer has hired the services of a new lawyer, Attorney-At-Law Jennifer Bonjean who was monumental in having American actor, Bill Cosby’s sexual convictions reversed.
Bonjean has now filed a motion to have Kelly’s most recent conviction overruled as well as having a new trial to prove his innocence. She claims that the singer’s previous trial in Brooklyn, New York had several questionable components along with graphic video evidence which showed him as a sexual deviant.
Additionally, she stated that jurors had seen the docuseries that aired in 2019 called “Surviving R.Kelly” before the start of the trial. This docuseries gave detailed accounts by multiple women the alleged sexual and mental abuse they suffered at the hands of the singer. She added that it contributed to R. Kelly receiving an unfair trial because the decision of the jurors was influenced.
On September 27, 2021, R. Kelly was found guilty of all nine charges laid against him with the charges of racketeering, sexual exploitation of a child, bribery, kidnapping and sex trafficking involving five victims.
He is set to be sentenced on May 4, 2022, at 10 a.m. and faces 10 years to life in prison.
