Riverton City Dump in St. Andrew on Fire – Watch Videos

In yet another incident in a seemingly unending series of unpredictable fires plaguing the Riverton City Dump and its surrounding communities, the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) was alerted Wednesday morning to a fire at the disposal site.

According to reports, the NSWMA was alerted at approximately 10:30 a.m. today and received assistance from the Jamaica Fire Brigade to put out the blaze. Four fire brigade units were dispatched to the area, and teams were reported to be at the facility working arduously to extinguish the fire and smother the smoke by nightfall.

Audley Gordon, the Executive Director of the NSWMA, shared that materials used to combat the blaze were stockpiled at the organisation’s facilities.

“We activated the usual protocols when we were alerted, and the fire brigade joined us quickly on the scene. Cover material (soil) is stockpiled at all our facilities, so we have enough material at the location to help us combat this blaze and return the facility to normality in the shortest possible time,” Gordon stated.
