In an unprecedented turn of events, the highly anticipated 2024 staging of Sting was cancelled mere hours before its scheduled start at Jamworld on Boxing Day. This marks the first-ever postponement or cancellation in the 40-year history of the iconic event, despite past challenges, including severe weather.
Isaiah Laing, head of Supreme Promotions Ltd., expressed deep dismay over the cancellation, citing significant economic and cultural repercussions. “Hundreds of vendors and concessionaires have invested their money, dozens of artistes have prepared to perform, and thousands of patrons will be disappointed. Unfortunately, it is beyond my control,” Laing lamented, as reported by Jamaica Observer.
The cancellation stemmed from a last-minute withdrawal by Clearsound Production Services Group, contracted to handle stage and sound. According to Laing, a $1 million deposit was paid Tuesday, with the remaining $6.5 million transferred this week. However, public holidays delayed the funds’ reflection in Clearsound’s account.
In an internal memo obtained by Observer Online, Clearsound cited “material breaches” of the contract and issued a cease-and-desist letter. The company’s operations team began withdrawing equipment and personnel from the site, stating only full payment could reverse their decision.
Tommy Lee Sparta, Pablo YG, Shane O, Yaksta and Jamal were scheduled to headline the show set for today December 26(boxing day), with Jeff Fullyauto, Inpha Reblitive and many others scheduled to take the stage for the first time.
Sting first took place in 1984.
Sting’s official social media page on Instagram made the announcement about 1 p.m. on Thursday.
