Sudden Spike in Deaths and Detected Cases of the Coronavirus in China

The Chinese province of Hubei recorded 242 deaths from the Novel coronavirus on Wednesday, this has been the highest number in one day since the outbreak.

There was also a massive increase in the number of new cases, as 14,840 individuals were diagnosed with the virus.

Hubei started using a broader definition in order to diagnose persons, which caused a sharp rise in cases.

China fired two of the top officials in Hubei province not long after the news about the increase was revealed.

Before Wednesday’s increases, the number of individuals with the virus in Hubei, the place where the outbreak emerged, was stabilized.

But the number of new cases and deaths in the province pushed the national death toll above 1,500 with over 60,000 infections in total.

At the same time, Japan has announced its first death from the virus, it was a woman in her 80s who lived in Kanagawa, south-west of Tokyo. It is the third death outside mainland China after there was one each in the Philippines and Hong Kong.

The woman’s diagnosis was only confirmed after she died and she had no sure link to China’s Hubei province, Japanese media reported.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is seeking “further clarity” from China about the changes to how the new cases of the virus are being confirmed.

China was accused of suppressing the full information of the outbreak in recent times, the BBC’s Nick Beake in Hong Kong, had said.

David Heymann, Professor of Infectious Disease Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, said: “What has happened in China is that they have changed the definition of what the disease is and they are now checking people who have less symptoms and this caused the spike in the number of cases”.

“The deaths are a cause for concern, the number of deaths reported increased, but looking at the overall number of deaths and the total number of cases, it is clear that the fatality ratio is approximately the same as before, but it is still as high as the influenza death.

Only Hubei province has more than 80% of the Chinese infections and has been using the new definition to diagnose the new cases now.
