During his performance at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona Carnival, dancehall artiste Valiant delivered an energetic performance for his fans and seemingly touched on being booted offstage by Popcaan before his big break in music.
Following Valiant’s instantaneous rise to fame after his Katch E Hat A Lie slang went viral, a clip of one of his earliest performances while he was a part of Popcaan’s crew resurfaced. In the video, the unseasoned performer was met with mostly silence from the audience, and Popcaan asked the crowd if they liked Valiant, to which some of them replied no.
The Firm and Strong deejay then told Valiant, “dem nuh like yuh.” Valiant has never directly addressed the issue, but in an interview on the Let’s Be Honest podcast, the artiste spoke about enduring disrespect during his time with Popcaan’s crew.
Though there was some controversy about the Dunce Cheque artiste performing at UWI, his fans appeared to be thoroughly pleased with his set on Saturday during one of the university’s carnival activities, D’After Mas, which followed the Ring Road march. The artiste performed several of his hits and was joined by Stalk Ashley for their single, Narcissistic. He went on to introduce a few new artistes while noting that no one had done the same for him.
“Yuh see every time me a perform, me always try bring a artiste pon eh stage cah nobody neva bring me pon stage. The last time dem bring me pon stage dem style me,” Valiant said while introducing a young deejay.
Near the end of his performance, Valiant expressed his gratitude to the audience and touched on the Popcaan incident once again.
“Me love eh wul a unuh. A far me a fawud from enuh. Unuh nuh see di likkle video wid di man run me off a eh stage. Not even applaud,” Valiant stated before performing his single Speed Off.
Amid growing rumours that Popcaan was unwilling to help young artiste, the deejay recently reshared an old On Stage interview, during which he introduced Valiant as a “bad, bad singer.” However, it appears that there is still a rift between both entertainers.
