Being the leader of Dancehall locally, Vybz Kartel’s latest musical release, based on numbers has shown that if he’s not the leader of the genre worldwide, then he’s at least the next best contender at the moment.
‘Str8 Vybz’ released on January 7 racked up over 1.7 million views by January 14, firmly sitting number one on YouTube’s ‘Trending for music’ in Jamaica chart.
“A who mek eh rum?”
The song which is so far the best promotion for his Str8 Vybz Rum is arguably one of his best sounding released songs since his release from prison in summer of 2024. Since being released from prison, the Gaza Nation leader has released 5 music videos.
The first released song, ‘The Comet’ has amassd over 11 miliion views and is the most viewed of his released tracks over the past year. He also released, ‘Cloudy’, ‘White Rum’ and ‘Good Like Jesus’ over the past 6 months.
Since the start of Janaury 2025, Beenie Man has been extra vocal about being the King of Dancehall, after Bounty Killer labelled Vybz Kartel as a King at Freedom Street Concert inside the National Stadium.
Vybz Kartel also dissmed there being another King other than himself during a recent interview with Winford Williams, stating, ‘Any other king is Burger King’. On the otherhand, Beenie Man recently stated that there is ‘One King, One Clown”.
Beenie Man recently previewed a song on Instagram in which he defends the ‘King’ position. Only time will tell when it will be released and if it will do as good numbers as any of Vybz Kartel’s recent musical releases.
